Equipment

  • Small bowl – for pickling the vegetables
  • Frying pan or skillet – for cooking the meat
  • Cutting board and knife – for slicing the vegetables and bread
  • Measuring cups and spoons – for accurate ingredient measurements

Ingredients
  

  • For the Pickled Vegetables:
  • 1/2 cup carrots julienned
  • 1/2 cup daikon radish julienned
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • For the Sandwich:
  • 4 baguette rolls or a French baguette, cut into 4 pieces
  • 1/2 lb pork tenderloin or chicken sliced thinly
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cucumber thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • Fresh jalapeño slices optional
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp sriracha or hot sauce optional

Instructions
 

  • Prepare the pickled vegetables: In a small bowl, combine vinegar water sugar salt Turn the rice in bottom to top. Throw in the carrots and daikon. While you prep the rest of your sandwich components, let them marinate.
  • Marinate the meat: Blend the soy sauce and fish sauce in another mixing bowl. Then the sliced pork (or chicken) and stir to coat. Marinate for at least 10 minutes.
  • Cook the meat: In a pan, heat the vegetable oil on medium-high. Place the marinated meat on the grill and cook for 3–5 minutes (2) until cooked through, golden brown. Set aside.
  • Assemble the sandwich: Halve the baguette rolls. Mayo on the outsides + a touch of sriracha (optional). Add the cooked meat, pickled vegetables and cucumber slices on top of one another along with cilantro and jalapeños if you have them.
  • Serve and enjoy! : Serve immediately so your sandwiches stay fresh!

Notes

  • Customise the Protein: Traditionally, Banh Mi can be made with various proteins, including pork, chicken, or tofu for a vegetarian option.
  • Adjust the Spice Level: Use sriracha sparingly or add more if you prefer extra heat. Jalapeños also add a nice kick if you like it spicy!
  • Best Bread Choice: A light, crispy baguette is key to a great Banh Mi. Look for a baguette that’s not too dense.
