Ingredients

  • 1 cup blueberries fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves plus extra for garnish
  • 3/4 cup sugar adjust to taste
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice about 4–6 lemons
  • 4 cups cold water
  • Ice as needed
  • Lemon slices for garnish

Equipment

  • 1 Small saucepan
  • 1 fine mesh strainer
  • 1 Wooden spoon
  • 1 pitcher
  • 1 citrus juicer

Method

  1. In a small saucepan, combine blueberries, sugar, and 1/2 cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally until berries break down (about 5-7 minutes).
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the basil. Let it steep for 10 minutes.
  3. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a pitcher. Discard solids.
  4. Add the freshly squeezed lemon juice and the remaining cold water. Stir well, taste and adjust sweetness if needed. Serve over ice with basil and lemon slices.

Notes

For a fizzy version, replace half of the water with chilled sparkling water just before serving. You can also muddle extra basil directly in your glass for a stronger herbal kick.
