Total Time 44 minutes
Servings: 2
Course: Milk
Cuisine: International
Calories: 300

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Airtight container for storage

Method

  1. Blend Ingredients: In a saucepan, combine the milk and sugar. Place over medium low heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Simmer: When the sugar has dissolved, gently bring the mixture to a simmer. Simmer over low heat for 35 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has reduced by half and is thickened.
  3. Stir in Butter and Vanilla: When thick, remove from heat and add butter (it makes a world of difference!) and vanilla if using. It contributes to the richness and flavor.
  4. Cool down: Let the mixture cool down to room temperature. The sauce will thicken as it cools down.
  5. STORAGE: Transfer the sweetened condensed milk to a jar or container and refrigerate for up to 1 week.

Notes

Watch the Heat: Keep the heat low to prevent the milk from scorching or boiling over. A slow simmer is key.
Consistency Check: The mixture will continue to thicken as it cools. If it looks a bit runny when hot, don’t worry—it will firm up after refrigeration.
