Equipment

  • 1 Large mixing bowl
  • 1 Whisk
  • 1 griddle or large non-stick skillet
  • 1 Spatula
  • 1 Measuring cup
  • 1 measuring spoon
  • 1 shallow dish for soaking bread

Ingredients

  • 4 slices sourdough bread thick-cut
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter for cooking
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Powdered sugar for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Make the egg mixture: Whisk the eggs, the milk, the extract, the cinnamon, the sugar, and the salt together in a large mixing bowl until they are well combined.
  • Soak the bread: Transfer the mixture to a shallow dish. Soak each slice of sourdough bread in the mix for approximately 30 seconds on each side.
  • Preheat the griddle: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and reduce one tablespoon of butter.
  • To cook the French toast: Place the soaked bread slices in an oiled or non-stick hot griddle and cook for 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Repeat with any remaining slices, adding more butter as needed.
  • Serve and Enjoy: Plate, dust with powdered sugar, and drizzle with maple syrup. It makes enough to serve hot with fresh fruit or strips of bacon alongside.

Notes

For extra crispiness, use day-old bread or slightly toasted sourdough.
If you prefer a richer taste, replace whole milk with heavy cream.
Pair it with: Fresh fruit, bacon, scrambled eggs, or sausage.
