Ingredients

  • 1 lb Italian sausage mild or spicy
  • 12 slider buns preferably soft, like brioche or whole wheat
  • 6 oz fresh mozzarella cheese sliced
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 tbsp olive oil for toasting buns
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Skillet or grill pan
  • Baking sheet
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Measuring spoons
  • Spatula
  • Tongs

Method

  1. Make the Sausage Patties: Remove the sausage from the casing and form it into 12 small patties (about 2 inches wide). Add a pinch of salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
  2. Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet or grill pan to medium heat. Add the sausage patties and fry for 4-5 minutes on each side or until cooked through (the internal temperature should reach 160°F). Take off the heat and set aside.
  3. Toast the Buns: What should you do with slider buns that are not microscopically small? Slice the slider buns and toast them with olive oil in another pan or on a baking sheet under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes, until golden and crispy.
  4. Assemble the Sliders: First, place the bottom half of each bun, then put a sausage patty on top, followed by a slice of mozzarella cheese. Drop a tablespoon of marinara sauce over the cheese, and add fresh basil.
  5. Serve: Place the top half of the bun over the assembled ingredients. Serve the sliders warm with additional marinara sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

You can use turkey or chicken sausage for a leaner alternative.
For extra flavor, you can add sautéed onions or peppers.
