Ingredients
  

  • Dough
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm milk 110°F
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp butter softened
  • Cheese Filling
  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup ricotta cheese
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 lemon optional
  • Egg Wash
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 tbsp milk

Method
 

  1. Activate Yeast: In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix Dough: Add egg, softened butter, salt, and flour. Knead by hand or with a dough hook for 8–10 minutes until smooth.
  3. First Rise: Cover and let dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Make Cheese Filling: In a bowl, blend cream cheese, ricotta, powdered sugar, vanilla, and lemon zest (if using) until creamy.
  5. Assemble: Roll dough into a rectangle. Spread the cheese mixture over the surface, leaving a ½-inch border. Roll up jelly-roll style, then place seam-side down into a greased loaf pan.
  6. Second Rise: Cover and let rise again for 30-45 minutes.
  7. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush loaf with egg wash and bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool & Slice: Let it cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or chilled.
